Default Real Estate and SEO

I currently am NOT taking on any more SEO Clients so this is NOT an ad.

I just wanted to mention to our REALTOR® members that it is always good to use a little common sense when reading all these SEO advertisements about “Guaranteed Placement” in the Search Engines.

First of all, no SEO company can guaranty placement. Search Engines are fluid and change constantly.

The second thing to remember is that top rankings in a hot real estate market can mean a tremendous amount of business, so why would an SEO company only charge a couple hundred dollars to get you to the top of the Seach Engines?

SEO takes a tremendous amount of knowledge, work and time to break into a competitive market.

There are short cuts that work on some SEs for a short period of time. These short cuts (often called “Black Hat SEO”) can get your site permanently banned from the Search Engines. Generally SEO companies that use these “Black Hat SEO” tactics will charge a premium, and when your site gets banned they simply find another REALTOR® to fill their coffers.

Unfortunately there are no short cuts in SEO and it isn’t cheap. Just remember that if it cost little, it is probably worth very little.

Plan your website like you business… for the long haul. Not short term.

There are plenty of reputable SEO companies out there that will provide a good service for a fair price.

Just my 2˘ worth.

Very true!

I find it amazing that some agents will spend $15,000 on a print media placement that will end up in someone's trash within a few days, but are hesitant to invest in SEO that provides a long term marketing solution.

Absolutely HHI Golf Guy!

While websites are responsible for the majority of real estate transactions, SEO is low on the priority list for REALTOR® marketing expenditures and budgets.

That has NEVER made any sense to me.

You're right Mack. I've been holding off having a professionally designed and SEOd site because I've been considering relocating. Once I'm certain where I'm going to be, I'll take the plunge confident in the fact that it will be the best investment I could make.

Good for you HMiller!

Although licensed in 2 states, I do my best to avoid selling real estate. Even though I am admittedly NOT very good at selling real estate, it interfered with sharpening my meager SEO skills.

Luckily my wife is the REALTOR® in the family and enjoys it (most of the time). I knew I had to make a decision to do one or the other or do poorly at both.

I am aslo suprised by how many agents not only "waste" their money with print advertising, but that they do so knowing that the internet is such a large factor in today's society. I mean, buyers and sellers are so web savvy anymore, I do not understand how many agents do not find it crucial to have a web presence????
