Make Learning Your Competitive Edge
Whether it's updated listings, product guidelines or a new office phone system, there’s always something you need to learn right now to make yourself more efficient and effective. Establish the habit of learning as one of your most valuable competitive skills.
Think. When tackling a subject, determine beforehand exactly what it is you need to know, which will allow you to focus. Use the daylight hours; you’re able to absorb 50 percent more during the daytime than at night. After you’ve learned something, review it in your mind to ensure you fully comprehend it. Integrate the information by seeing how it applies to your business goals. Pace yourself; give your mind a break now and then or you’ll cease being productive.
Read. Read a book for 15 minutes a day and you’ll complete about 18 books a year! Whatever it is you’re reading — a book, a paper, a manual — skim the introduction and the conclusion first so you’ll know what to look for. As you read through, concentrate on the information you need and slide over unnecessary parts.
Speak. If you’re not clear about what you’ve just learned, talk to somebody who does understand it and ask them to explain it to you. Or, simply review it with them to make sure you comprehend it correctly.
Remember, if you choose not to learn something new and valuable, that doesn’t mean your competition will make the same choice!
Happy Hunting...
