We'd be out of business without our site. Big Canoe is a small community in the North Georgia mountains, and it's something of a niche market which I think lends itself very well to web based marketing. We use a combination of a blog with our listings so we can provide as much info about the community as possible. So far it has worked pretty well for us.

The only thing that comes to my mind when I read this thread is, what is the use of promotions if there is nothing to promote.

It's not all about trolling for buyers, our successful websites are a great marketing tool when sitting down with a potential seller letting them know how you are going to market their property.

I think it is a waste of time, money and resources for agents on the Outer Banks to have a website

Real estate agents help people buy and sell houses. They must be able to say approximately how much money a house is worth. They need to know what the neighborhoods in their towns are like. They must know the laws that have to do with buying or selling a house. They also can tell home buyers where to get a loan if they need more money to buy a house. In return for selling a house, real estate agents get to keep a small part of the money that the buyer paid for it. Real estate agents work for real estate brokers. Real estate brokers manage real estate offices.

Do real estate agent really need to have a personal website

I'm not going to say that real estate agents should not have a web presence, just do they need to have the own personal website? There are plenty of third party sites for posting listings. Many of these sites get better traffic, have larger advertising budgets, and have more access to real estate information. So why spend hours every day keeping your personal site updated, fighting a losing SEO war, and getting only a few hundred visitors?

How does having your own site really make you stand out as a Realtor? Does the extra time spend on your own website benefit your clients more than other advertising methods? If you think so, what is your proof?
There have been many great comments on this thread, however it has moved a little off track. The original topic was not if a real estate agent should have a web presence but if they need to have a personnel site.

The pros for a personnel site appear to be 1) having a site the reflect you as a agent and having a site that is unique. The cons are 1) the time and money it takes to upkeep a site, 2) less traffic.

The pros for a group site are 1) Much more traffic and listing visibility, 2) Less upkeep, 3) more features. The cons are 1) sharing a site with your competition, 2) A site that is not uniquely yours.

If you see other advantages and disadvantages, please post.

Yes but effective overall web presence includes more than just a website. And a cheesy website is not going to work, but it takes alot of time, money and effort to make the internet work for you. I still don't have it, but work on web presence everyday.
