Sorry I missed this post before. A few of my sites got hammered. Even a site that had been on top for years. My own SEO site even got hammered (the caveat to that one is I had not added a new link to my own site in two years, so that's my fault for not continuing to build links).
Yahoo and Google are really making changes on how they interpret inbound and outbound links. The biggest thing we are doing is moving all of our outbound links to sub domains. This way, if a search engine does not like our outbound links, the root domain will not be penalized.
Why would a search engine not link your outbound links? Maybe a site you link to is suddenly considered part of a link network or bad neighborhood. Maybe the domain registration expires and it becomes an adult site (I have seen a few RE sites suddenly become adult sites).
Pages that are obvious link pages used to build link popularity also seem to be getting zapped. We lost a ton of links on sites because the link pages were de-indexed or put in supplemental results.
That's why we are working on building real estate and location resource sub domains for our outbound links. I posted a few example links in another post today.
I'm trying to do some neat things for our article exchange partners as well. For example, the index page of our real estate resource guides randomly picks out links to 2-3 articles every time the page is accessed.
If done correctly, RSS feed exchanges are also a great way to build links and content - and keep links and content fresh. For more info on what we're doing with links you can visit
