Open realty is a good listing management program with a good support community. It has both benefits and limitations.
There is a moderate learning curve for anyone wishing to use OR.
OR has the three basic functions of listing management:
Search listings
Display search results or summary of listings
Listing Display
In addition it has:
Templating system
Agent functions
Subscriber Fuctions
Page editor
It has an admin area to add/edit: listings, agents and pages and to upload images.
In effect OR is a CMS for real estate which is a strenght for non-developers but a limitation for developers. It does the job reasonably well and probably as good as or better than commercial programs.
It's great for Realtors who like to do things for themselves, have there own listings, have time to learn the ins and outs of OR and who do not want or need or much customization.
I have used OR for many IDX projects mainly for the listing functions but have recently drawn away because the overhead to make OR a do-it-yourself program and the its monolitic nature create barriers to rapid development and its database conceptualization makes it inefficent for IDX conversions.
