Default Quality Reciprocal or Homepage Links?

Which links are more valuable to my website, quality reciprocal or one way homepage links? I've heard that reciprocal links from quality websites are the best types of links to have, but I've also heard more that one person say that if I could get one-way homepage links that my website would benefit more than if I had reciprocal links. So which is it?

A side page pr3 of a pr7+ site beats a pr4 home page any time. Does that answer your question probably not.

Don't look at PR or where the page is. There are two other major factors (out of 100) you should look at. How much is google trusting the overall domain name, how related is the page you are being linked from, and the very last how much PR is involved on that page.

Mert - also should someone be looking at the number of outbound links on the page as well, since the PR is spread over all the outbound links?

You might want to get into the mindset that if you are giving a link you're doing it because of the merit of the page or site. If you are getting a link it's for the traffic it can drive.

To begin with I don’t believe in using Home page links but if you do the number of links on any page is very important.

Not only does it split the PR it also states in Google’s Guidelines not to exceed 100 links. All indication means this is 100 links total (inbound and outbound). There seems to be an indexing issue with pages that have over 100 links.

Some RE Agents have used this to their advantage by having well over 100 links on their Home Page causing in effect one-way inbound links. This has been discussed in several threads on several forums and nothing has changed so I have no intention of getting into that however the way it works is that the Agents has numerous internal links on a page before they get to their partner links. So when Google hits the recommended 100 link limit the partner's reciprocating link is not indexed.

I have even brought this to the attention of site owners and webmasters that engage in this practice. They are FULLY aware of what they are doing and are INTENTIONALY deceiving their link partners.

Yahoo has led the way in the “War on Spam” and has penalized sites with outbound Home Page links. It is only a question of time before Google does the same IMHO.

It is an honor to have the great Jay Griffin here by the way ladies and gentlemen. Sorry I can not be involved with conversations in REW Jay as I also got sadly banned by Morgan (for questioning content link exchange strategies he lately implemented) but follow your comments closely.

I fully agree with the whole advice. The problem we have with us the local sites is that we do real estate and we are local. As I made a humorous joke in my latest blog piece on Real Estate Webmasters and Google the issue is that reciprocal linking outside the link farm tactics is sort of becoming like the illegal drug trade. Google will bust some and not the others. My site is one of the busted ones due to association with REW in the past. The issue is how to get links to a real estate site. I mean what deems us interesting as a real estate site. Jim Messenger talks about link baiting to sell his blogcentric websites and I respect that but how many good realtors are that creative writers or even have the time to do that type of writing which is interesting and link baitable??? I mind you the types of Andy Hagans charges thousands of dollars for a real link baiter. Do you see our dillemma?

Since Jim Messenger has been mentioned, if he gives advice regarding how to possibly correct this problem... LISTEN!

Link building does not have to be complicated and I have been saying it for years. Quality far outranks quantity.

For the last 3 years I have referenced a real estate agent's site that has been and is a PR6 and ranks well for several, if not all, of its most important keywords. It has 32 backlinks showing in Google. Most are paid, some aren't and I would guess he doesn't spend more than a thousand dollars a year.

Agreed Jay.

But guys let's not mix threads here and stay on this threads topic of "Home Page Links".

Comments about the REW and AA site penalties, or the causes and fixes need to be made to the “Linking 101” thread.
