A showdown may be looming between the federal government and the nation's largest organization of real estate agents over plans to restrict access to Internet listings.
If the National Association of Realtors proceeds with a plan to adopt a change in its bylaws, consumers no longer would be able to use the Internet to search comprehensively for homes, in particular on Web sites operated by a growing number of discount brokers.
Viewing the move as a possible restraint of trade, the Justice Department is reportedly threatening to sue the Realtors group to prevent the rule from taking effect.
