Default Google PageRank and Links

Very interesting article on Google PR (PageRank) Al.

My interest peaked when I got to the part about purchased links.
Quote:
Links with text around them that indicate they are purchased, such as "Partners", "Advertising", etc.

Google has and is actively trying to reduce the value of paid links. This appears to have been moderately successful where there is clear indication that the link is paid for.
There has been much debate in this and other real estate forums about purchased links and the benefits of surrounding your links by text.

I for one believe in that purchasing links are a no no in Google, but if the author of the Site Pro News article is correct, surrounding your link with text could even be misinterpreted as a purchased link.

Real Estate SEO Clients are always contacting me about this site or that being at the top of the Google SERPS with hundreds of purchased links in their market. I may be overly cautious but I believe that just means they haven’t been caught yet. I’ve seen several sites with purchased links climb rapidly in the Google SERPs and go to as high as a PR7 before being banned by Google.

If you re-read the Google Patent Application (as I suggest all of our Members do), it clearly states in paragraph 0077
Quote:
The dates that links appear can also be used to detect "spam," where owners of documents or their colleagues create links to their own document for the purpose of boosting the score assigned by a search engine. A typical, "legitimate" document attracts back links slowly. A large spike in the quantity of back links may signal a topical phenomenon (e.g., the CDC web site may develop many links quickly after an outbreak, such as SARS), or signal attempts to spam a search engine (to obtain a higher ranking and, thus, better placement in search results) by exchanging links, purchasing links, or gaining links from documents without editorial discretion on making links. Examples of documents that give links without editorial discretion include guest books, referrer logs, and "free for all" pages that let anyone add a link to a document.
While we want to continue this thread on Google PR, we felt that misconceptions and myths about building link popularity justified a new topic and in depth analysis for our Real Estate Forum Members.

Have seen the same thing too Mack. People bragging on their pr of 7 only to get nailed by G for bs links or questionable linking practices. Some are still getting away with it so it encourages others. Personally I don't think its worth the short term gains.

I don't feel that there is any feasible way that Google could EVER accomplish penalizing paid text links. They are FAR too similar to the way an organic linking campaign is constructed, and some of the links that are wrapped in text are quite relevant and Google knows this!

If you boil it down to the core issue here, the ONLY way that Google can interpret a purchased text link from an organic link, and I stress ONLY, would be if the USER(meaning the owner of the particular website in question) doesn't understand how text links are read. The reason that you are seeing people achieving a PR6 or PR7 within the real estate realm is definitely due to text link purchases. If Google could spot these, they would NEVER assign that type of PR. The reason you see that same person fall off after an update or two to a PR5, or whatever, is simply due to the fact that they didn't keep that link active.

Lets face it, quality PR6, PR7 and PR8 text links are in no means cheap. Almost EVERY person I've ever worked with that was smart enough to purchase text links, did so for a few months, saw their PR skyrocket, and then they assumed that paying for the link was no longer necessary. This just isn't how to approach text link advertising.

Just as I have read on this network, as well as several other blogs, people bash text link advertising all over the place. Conversely, they claim that the ONLY way to get high PR is through 'organic linking campaigns' and MAINTAINING those links throughout time. Focus on the word MAINTAINING!!!!
You have to commit yourself to keep paying for those text links for a LONG period of time, or else Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. WILL IN FACT catch you.

It's not hard for them to scratch their heads if you get a bunch of PR7 websites to link to you for 3 months and then dissappear. This is precisely why they catch these websites! They pay attention to the dates acquired, and how long they maintain their linking relationship with your website.

I'm not saying this is an absolute, but if you look at purchased text links the same way you look at your 'organic' linking', I don't think it leaves much room for interpretation. Please let me know your thoughts, or if you think I'm out of my mind.......
