It is important to get a good pagerank for your site, but Google does not give you the real pagerank of a site on that free toolbar. As was stated earlier, focus on your keyword rankings and adding quality content to your site and you should naturally increase your pagerank.

Content can indirectly increase your PR but backlinks is the one that play the big role in determining a site's PR.
