I hope you are right. It would give my site a big lift on the state and national level.

Google does consider when someone clicks on your site in the natural results over another site. They move up the more clicked on site.

I didn't know that. I knew the number of clicks affected the sponsored results (the most profitable moved up) but not the organic results.

I think traffic is king. Not that it will directly affect search results, but I noticed that with traffic, comes links. The more people see and like your site, the more likely they are to organically link to it, and that's what Google wants anyway.

They either do not use clicks or use them to such a small extent that they are worthless. There are many site that I compete with on keywords that I out traffic them 10 to 1, yet they still have better positions.

I think that the issue is getting confused here. Quite possibly Google does not use traffic to determine SERP position. Nobody really knows because Google never says.
However Google (and other SE's) most certainly take keyword popularity into account and this means ALMOST the same thing.
To make my meaning absolutely clear: If I get (say) 1,000 clicks a month for "moraira real estate" and a competitor gets 1,500 then, all other factors being equal, he would be higher up the heap than me.
However, it is not quite so,so simple because Google will also take clicks on other real estate keywords for the same area into account.
I am sure of this, although it is too difficult to prove, because I have seen lots of signs of this.
Therefore actual traffic probably is not important but incoming SE traffic for a wide range of relevant ketwords is very important.

Web Traffic...

Well if you really think about it why wouldn't it be a key factor. I think that it is probably a bigger key to our success than we realize. Granted it is a very hard thing to prove and may never be publicized. But if you really give it some serious thought I think natural organic traffic is one huge key or element to your ranking. IMHO

OK then - We are considering the question "Is traffic important"!
We also have to consider "reasonable doubt".
Due to the vaugarities of SEO we cannot dismiss this possibility beyond reasonable doubt. Therfore we have to continue to consider it and the answer is "Yes, traffic is important".

I rest my case.

I would not go that far, the best I think we can say is "Maybe, SE clicks have some value". Without Google telling us the specifics of how it ranks sites, we are try to determine if a site gets SE clicks well because it has good SERP or that is has good SERP because it gets SE clicks.

Let assume that the second statement is true "A site has good SERP because it gets SE clicks". Because of browsing habits, sites listing on the first page above the fold would get a majority of the clicks. The click rate would fall off quickly after the first page. If this were true and Google gave SE click much wieght, then those sites at the top would stay at the top. Yet we do see that the top spot do change. So this cannot be completly true.

Let assume that the first statement is true "A site gets SE clicks because it has good SERP". In this case sites would move around based on other factors (Keyword density, content, inbound links, etc.) Sites at the top of the list would tend to get more traffic and thus more links. Also, sites with fresh content would tend to rank higher than those with static content. Older sites with more links pointing to them would also rank better.

Looking at both senerios, it appears to me that the second better describe what we are seeing with the SERP.

lols if that's the case then life would be easier just hire someone who will click your website to get in the top search of SEs.

Google or any other major SE will not resort to such algorithm.

Is traffic important? Yes

More traffic the higher the chance to your product/services conversion.
