Default What is a good keyword density?

For the front page, what is a good keyword density range for your main keywords? Also at what density does Google hit you with a keyword stuffing penalty.

I generally do 3 to 4 mentions for every 100 words. Be sure to keep in mind your "template" text etc... I usually just get a current "cached" version off of Google and copy the text to a word doc to help with word counts etc...

Hope that helps. I'll be interested in others responses to this.

I will also add that for example "chicago real estate", "chicago condos" and "chicago MLS" you will only optimize the density for "chicago" once. Make sense?

chicago
real
estate
condos
mls

It seems as though the key word density varies from market to market.

I have always wondered about that.

Yeah I think you are right, I just go with the general do 3 to 4 mentions for every 100 words. If I had the desire to really focus on a specific term I would do a complete analysis for the top 10 for 15 sites for the term(s), minus the sites that aren’t very content driven. Same method, get cached version, copy text from text only version and paste to word… Analyze away.

I used to worry about it but now I just write and throw in a few keywords here or there.

In my experience it is best to write for your users and not worry about KW density. Obviously if you are stuffing keywords you will run into a problem but if you are writing naturally you will be fine. If you can justify having all of the instances of your main keyword you will be fine. Sometimes you have to use it a lot to convey your point. Other times not so much.Just write for your users in a way that explains what the page is about and you should have no problems.

Think about it, if there were a filter for KW density besides spotting obvious stuffing there are a ton of sites that would get whacked for it just because of the use of common words (not their keywords just regular expressions that get used all the time). I am sure that engines could add a filter to ignore words like the, and, etc but it would require way too many resources to filter out all of the common words that could pop up. Because of this I believe they look for obvious keyword spam which is easy to program for and move on.
