Default Google Acknowledges Big Daddy Bug

Google has been struggling with their highly publicized “Big Daddy” update for months now.

Google has recently acknowledged a “Big Daddy” bug.

The bug reportedly causes;
  • Dropping of indexed pages/inconsistent indexing
  • Dead 404 pages reappearing in the search results
  • Old cached pages
  • Irrelevant results
  • Slow crawling activity

Since the “Big Daddy” update I have also noticed some of the wildest PR ever. Just the other day I found a relatively new blog with 3 back links and few post with a PR8. I also see sites with an unusually low PR on their home page and much higher (or normal appearing) PR on their interior pages.

Clearly Google has some work to do on these problems and I am confident they are addressing these issues.

What concerns me is that I am in contact will several individuals that are making drastic changes or adjustments to their sites in an effort to regain their pre “Big Daddy” rankings.

I think we should all be careful about attempting to hit a moving target. Let Google stabilize BEFORE making serious changes to your site.

Stick with the basics. Add good content that is useful to the visitor and add relevant links.

Once Google gets all of the bugs out and all of the filters in place then you can make any major modifications if required.

I read more than one blog on the Matt Cutts blogger reporting those problems as well. I didn't know that Google had acknowledged these problems, but I assumed it was only a matter of time. No way that many people could be reporting the same problems and it only be smoke. I hope they get this under control soon.

With MSN and Yahoo aggressively seeking a larger market share recently, you can be sure the pressure is on the engineers at Google.

I am just surprised that Bill Gates has not done more to capitalize on Google’s misfortune.

I checked some datacenters today and see many pages that were previously removed from the G index have now come back. Many of these pages are coming back as supplemental results, and there are even some old pages (pages we had long ago removed from the sites) showing up in the results.

I don't thinks it's a true rollback, though. The cached pages are up to date.

The latest step in "Big Daddy" turned out to be a "Big Flop". It looks like G is going back to the drawing board on this one.

The datacenters are all over the board.

As for the indexing, I see my sites on a daily roll-a-coaster ride. Up, down, supplemental pages one day, no supplemental pages the next.

It is beginning to look like a major algorithm change.

Perhaps Google should just do a roll back pre “Big Daddy” then look for a better algo.

I really do not believe it is an algorithm change. I still think it's an infrastructure change as G originally stated.

As pages appear or disappear in the G index, the SERP's change as well. For example, you may be credited with X links today on Y datacenters, but if those links pages are dropped or supplemental tomorrow your SERP's may change.

There is one thing that I have noticed that is very important. If you have outbound links on your pages that are not directly real estate related you may have seen your SERP's drop 30-40 places over the last few days.

Will this last? I don't know. But it may be coming to fruition what Matt Cutts stated about link relevance on outbound links.
