Default Only 3% of women's businesses reach $1mil- glass ceiling?

As a female entrepreneur, I was kind of appalled at hearing this news considering that the number of women entrepreneurs is increasing at an extraordinary rate, growing at four times the national pace of business formation between 1997 and 2002. Women owned firms now account for nearly 40 percent of U.S. businesses according to the Center for Women’s Leadership at Babson College Babson College - Myths and Realities of Women Entrepreneurs

Is this just another glass ceiling?

I really believe that better press, increased dialogue and sponsorship—from angel networks to corporations—is the key to establishing a strong women’s network.

And from seeing what the fabulous female entrepreneurs (Sandy Lerner, Cisco; Kay Koplovitz, USA Networks) are doing out there, that change is happening right now.

Let’s discuss, I would love to hear what others have to say about these statistics. Did they shock you as much as me?

Question Re: Only 3% of women's businesses reach $1mil- glass ceiling?

erobbins...

The question I have is how does this stack up to men and their success?

IMHO this number seems really low...

I feel like women have just as much ability and probably a lot more why usually being the anchor of the family!

I really would like to see the true comparison female vs. male!

Hey there SDRE! I thank you very much for your attention and reply to my post, I really appreciate it!

I do agree that these statistics are a little unsettling, and that more needs to be done in order for women to afford the same successes as our male counterparts. In comparison to this, males actually have the upperhand with a 3% advantage over women. Although I feel that in the next couple years, that gap could be closing due to the fact that more women are graduating from college than men, therefore giving us the advantage in attaining those high level positions.

Hopefully one day soon, other women who own their own small businesses are able to attain the same high level of successes as our male counterparts. Being that you are in SD, by any chance did you hear about the Vision to Venture business seminar that took place there on Apr 15th? It was presented by Microsoft and was geared towards women in business. One of the speakers was John Jantsch, are you familiar with his Duct Tape Marketing blog? His blog was chosen as a Forbes favorite for small business and marketing. Very informative and useful information.

What are some methods you use to promote your real estate business?

And are there any other women that have any opinions on this subject?

These statistic are troubling and surprising to me, considering all of the progress that's been made with women in the workplace and in business. I thought the percentage would be much higher, but then again, how many people's businesses are successful or reach the 1 million dollar level on a national scale, male or female? The percentage can't be that high, but it is definitely lower for women for some reason.
