Default What PC Enthusiasts Need For Christmas

Are you a PC power user? Do you frequently multi-task? Are you tired of your spouse asking you what you want for Christmas? Then let me make a suggestion on what Santa should bring you this year.

If you have never used a PC with multiple monitors, you just don't know what you're missing. Sure, running two or three monitors sounds really geeky. I was skeptical too.

One weekend afternoon it was raining outside and I had no home improvement projects going on in the house, so I decided to clean up my home office. I tend to be a pack rat, especially when it comes to technology.

While I was cleaning up I ran across an old flat panel monitor that I had replaced some months ago. Frankly, I don't remember what got me thinking about hooking up two monitors at once, but I was bored so I thought I would give it a try.

My video card had two DVI ports, so I hooked up the second monitor and ran my Nvidia software to configure the second flat panel. After a few minutes of experimenting, I had it set up correctly so that I could use my mouse and scroll left and right between the monitors.

After a few days I was hooked. For a guy like me that may be working in multiple software for one project (i.e. Flash, a graphics program, and FTP connection, a web application, and more going on at the same time) this was a great solution.

I could never go back to using a single monitor again. I have since upgraded that old flat panel to a new widescreen, and I'm thinking about upgrading my video card and adding a third monitor. (OK, that might be a bit geeky).

So if you have an old monitor around and a video card that supports two monitors, give it a try for a few days. If you need a new video card you can get one with two DVI outputs (for digital monitors) for under $70 bucks. If you have an old analog monitor you can even get a converter for under $10.

Give it a try. You have no idea what you're missing!

I didn't need to hear this. I have a not so old flat screen sitting on the floor looking at me begging to get hooked up. Now I have another project to nag away at the back of my brain.

If you spend a decent amount of time each week on your PC, you owe it to yourself to upgrade to a dual monitor display. You won't be disappointed. In fact, after a few days you'll wonder how you ever did without it.
