Default Update your WordPress blogs

If you have a WordPress blog that is version 2.2 or later it may be wise to update it for a few security reasons.

WordPress announced a few days ago and in recent history that maintenance updates fix potential security holes.

Doing an upgrade from 2.2+ to 2.3.1 should not break your existing blog theme but if you do encounter this drop a note here and I can show you how to fix it.

If anyone needs assistance in this area feel free to request it, I'd hate to see more security issues surface given recent events.

Thanks for the update! I actually manage two blogs now and am thinking of starting a third. All three use WordPress.

Where do you go to find out what version you have? I can't seem to find it.

Look at the very bottom of the admin page. It should show the WordPress logo, then it will show links to documentation and support forums. Below that it will show the version number - like 2.0 then the seconds it took to load the page.

At least that's what my version shows...

Dangerous to update from that version without making provisions. Let me get you a list before you do.

Sorry for the late response, the list is essentially this;

1) Backup everything, including existing blog files and database.
2) Upload the new blog files but KEEP THE wp-config.php file you currently have.
3) simply ftp and overwrite all WP files.
4) visit your domain and then /wp-admin/upgrade.php
5) after all that simple stuff, now you deactivate the plugins that will give you problems if you have any and then examine the update notices to make updates accordingly to those plugins.
6) The hardest part really should have a list of its own. Template problems are likely to be the thing you experience first and the only thing I can suggest without a lengthy procedural checklist is to update the blog, and watch for errors.

I have the code snippets to bring the blogs up to date if you need them.

A spank of new features make blogging with WP a real benefit to sites.

Do you know anyone I could pay to do this for me? What should I expect to pay? I didn't install the original one and I'm a little nervous to mess with it.

Yeah I wont charge (if its not complex) just send me the URL so I can examine the template and if its not difficult to update I can do it in about 10 minutes for ya including install.

~ Jared Ritchey

P.S. You asked what the expected fee should be and most updates for WP 2.0+ run about $35 on average. I've seen some people charge way more but realistically its about 15 minutes to an hour depending on required template edits and if there are multiple plugins which need accommodating for. Not to mention that most guys that do provide update services also include the backup and archive for emergency recovery should the backup not go well. I do backups as routine BTW.

I say "emergency recover" because in all the times I've done this for people there is about 1 in 5 that break for one reason or another and rarely for serious reasons. WordPress is solid and does a good job with updates but there are times the tables don't get either added or updated with the installer.
