I'm not going to critique Morgan's blog post.
As for how the situation was handled? Basically, I trust the people I know --and tend to believe in them. So, if I'm in Morgan's position, being accused of something I know I didn't do, I would try and figure out what actually happened. First, I might assume I'm being "set up," then to cover my bases, I would ask my employees and I would check to see if that IP address was, in fact, tied to my company.
Which is what Morgan did.
How would I explain it afterward? I think I would state the facts as I knew them and apologize. Would I do it immediately? Probably not. Since everyone is up in arms against me, anyway -- I would want to see how negative they would go. Would I write my statement the same way Morgan did? Also, probably not, but then, I'm a writer. Truth be told, I would probably be as brief as humanly possible and still get the point across that it was wrong, that it won't happen again, and apologize. Would I reveal who in my employ did the deed? No way.
But I would be pissed about it.
Would I fire the employee? Probably not, unless the individual had a history of poor decision-making in the past. I've managed restaurants, loan branches, companies, soldiers, and I've worked for huge corporations. I would certainly counsel the individual to never do anything like that again, make them take an ethics class, and if he/she made another gross error in judgment then he/she would be gone.
At the same time, the internet is in some ways a very informal place with informal rules, at least until you grow into a large corporation. So I would probably see some humor in the situation, too -- though I might not admit to it publicly. I would probably have viewed some of the group at PREN as having a grudge against me (deservedly or not), and might view the fact that someone sneaked into the admin page and deleted some of those threads as a truly delicious prank -- not something
I would have
done, mind you -- but I imagine that I would have seen some humor and irony in the situation, from my point of view (not yours, of course). It might even be something I would later consider a humorous anecdote to tell friends over a pitcher of beer at a bar. Not something I would tell employees, but friends.
That's honesty, for you -- and my own take on things, not anyone else's.
