While I agree with the other posters that pictures are the most visible and impacting impression a buyer gets from a listing, I don't think that real estate agents need to hire a professional. By getting a feel for just the basics of photography (staging, light, angle), any real estate agent can take beautiful shots.
Try shooting while a sunset illuminates the house attractively, or from an interesting angle. Play around, take a bunch of shots, and have fun with it.
