The reasons why - many directories will run afoul of Google at some point. A link on your site to them will drag you down with them.
- Many times your listing will be on an interior page with a lower PR. So you end up trading a good PR link from your home page for a lower PR link from one of their interior pages. This is a net SEO loss for you.
- The same also applies to traffic. The traffic you send to the directory will be less than the traffic you receive from it.
